Spotted in New York recently by the eagle eye of library team member Jenny, was this impressive Selwyn plaque.

The plaque, located in the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in Amsterdam Avenue (reputedly the fourth largest Christian church in the world) survived a major fire in 2001, which caused the cathedral to close until 2008.  See http://www.stjohndivine.org/ for further information about the cathedral.

For more information about Bishop Selwyn see http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/1966/selwyn-george-augustus/1.

We wonder if anyone knows how the plaque came to be here?

Were you there? 1981 Springbok Tour Cross

This is the wooden cross that was carried onto the rugby field at Hamilton by protesters against the 1981 Springbok Tour in August-September that year.  St John’s College faculty and students had a high profile, and a group from the College travelled to Hamilton for this event.  The cross was made by one of the students in his garage, in a hurry specially for the occasion.

The cross was rescued from obscurity amongst some timber at the College about three years ago, and is now part of the College’s archives collection held at the John Kinder Theological Library.  Currently, it is on its way to Te Papa in Wellington as part of a display there.
