More from the Church Missionary Gleaner
In February 1899, the Church Missionary Gleaner featured missionary work in the Bay of Plenty with photographs and an article about the mission at Raukokore and at Torere (Church of the Holy Sepulchre), both of which were under the direction of the Rev’d George Maunsell, son of Archdeacon Maunsell. Maunsell worked with a Maori deacon, the Rev’d Hakaria Pahewa.

The Church Missionary Gleaner
The Church Missionary Gleaner (of which we have a few issues) is well illustrated and includes the New Zealand Mission in its content. This publication is a rich source for portraits and general view of Church Missionary Societies (CMS) missions worldwide.
In the issue for January 1897, there is an obituary for Jane Williams, wife of William Williams, first Bishop of Waiapu. It includes this portrait noted as taken in 1892, and thus enables a definite dating.
The article concludes “This aged saint received her Home Call on October 6th, 1896 at the age of exactly 95 and a half years”.
